Bruce Stannard AM is an author and journalist with over 45 years experience in all aspects of journalism - newspapers, magazines, television and radio.  He has reported from the United States, Britain, Vietnam, the Middle East, Eastern and Western Europe and throughout Australia.

In 1982 Bruce was the first Australian journalist to win a Nieman Fellowship to Harvard University.

Bruce Stannard is a well known and highly respected yachting commentator and award-winning author, particularly associated with The America's Cup and Sydney Harbour.  Bruce's live radio broadcasts of the 1983 America's Cup series for the Australian Broadcasting Commission secured him a place in Australian sporting history.

Bruce served on the Council (the governing body) of the Australian National Maritime Museum for a total of 10 years. During that time he secured for the Museum Norway’s Bicentennial Gift to the people of Australia, the gaff-rigged ketch Kathleen Gillett; and New Zealand’s Bicentennial Gift, the gaff-cutter Akarana. He conceived the idea of the Endeavour Replica, and was instrumental in raising much of the $17 million for Endeavour’s construction. Bruce is a Life Member of the Australian National Maritime Museum. 

In 2001 Bruce was awarded Membership in the Order of Australia for his work in preserving Australia’s maritime heritage and has also been awarded a Knighthood by the King of Norway, Norway's highest civil honour.

Bruce has had a life-long association with maritime heritage and has a special knowledge of the ships of the mid-nineteenth century. He has restored three historic vessels, the latest being the 100-year-old gaff rigged yawl, Mallana.

Bruce is the author of ten books, including the biographies of the marine artist, Jack Earl, the designer of Australia II, Ben Lexcen and the US America's Cup skipper Dennis Conner, together with  Sparkling Sydney and Aboard Endeavour.

Bruce's best known book is the award-winning Bluewater Bushmen, first published in 1981 and reprinted by the author as a Limited Edition in 2004.

Bruce Stannard is also a regular contributor to HighLife Magazine, Afloat Magazine and the US publication, Wooden Boat.
